Public Wi-Fi Security Tips
Public Wi-Fi Security Tips
When browsing the internet in public, bad actors may take advantage of you online. Read our blog for some helpful tips to keep you more secure in public, if you are interested in protecting your home or business today, call Maverick Security at (713)532-9005.
Turn OFF Auto-Connect
Many modern devices often automatically connect to publicly available Wi-Fi. This setting is meant to offer convenience, and is okay to use with trusted networks, but it will also connect you to networks that may be dangerous. By going into your devices settings, you can disable the auto-connect feature. It’s a great practice to keep this setting off as an extra precaution when going out into public.
Also, monitor your bluetooth settings. Bluetooth connectivity will allow other devices to communicate with yours, and someone can use open bluetooth signals for nefarious reasons.
Confirm You Have the Correct Network
Ensure that your devices are connected to the correct network. Hackers have been known to create networks that look harmless on the surface, but in fact will direct you with a network that tracks all your actions. This means crucial information or sensitive info can be tracked, such as credit card info or SSN for example. To protect yourself from getting your identity or card information stolen, read the network name carefully and if possible as for signage/login from an employee to ensure the network is legitimate.
Turn Off File-Sharing
Make sure that your file-sharing feature is off while on a public Wi-Fi connection. This can normally be turned off from your system preferences or control panel, depending on the operating system you might be using. For example, Apple’s “AirDrop” feature is something you would want to turn off in public. Here are some steps to turn this feature off:
On a PC:
Go to the Network and Sharing Center.
Change Advanced Sharing Settings.
Turn Off File and Printer Sharing.
For Macs:
Go to System Preferences.
Choose Sharing.
Unselect Everything.
Next in Finder, select AirDrop, and select “Allow me to be discovered by: No One.
For iOS, find AirDrop in the Control Center and turn this feature off for safer browsing practices.
4. Use a VPN
Look into options available for VPN services on your device(s). This will allow you to have the most secure digital privacy if you happen to join a public network. Your data will be encrypted as it passes from your device, and acts as a protective “barrier” so your personal data isn’t visible on the network.
